Knowledge and Information Auditing and Mapping (KL-KIAM)
This course is a response to the consistent demand for knowledge and skills in planning and executing knowledge and information audits and maps to improve organisational information and knowledge (IKM) policies, strategies and processes.
“The information/knowledge audit is a process for discovering, monitoring and evaluating an organisation’s information resources and flows in order to implement, maintain, or improve the organisation’s management of information” (Buchanan & Gibb)
Business, government and research leaders across the world concur that the ability to exploit knowledge and information as key productive resources is a critical organisational success factor in the knowledge economy. Therefore, information and knowledge policies and strategies should be at the heart of the enterprise strategy in both private and public sector organisations. To ensure the success of such an initiative it is imperative that effective and systematic information and knowledge auditing and mapping processes are employed.
An information and/or knowledge audit should be one of the first steps that are undertaken when implementing an Information and Knowledge Management (IKM) programme. This ensures that a thorough understanding is obtained of the organization’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of its information and knowledge resources and assets (these include networks, systems, applications, documents, databases, people and also organisational routines).
It is further also important that audits are conducted on a regular ongoing basis to monitor whether an organisation’s information and knowledge resources and assets remain relevant to the strategy of the organisation, particularly in times of turbulence and change. The key outcome of such an assessment is to identify how the information and knowledge resources of the organisation can be mobilised to contribute significantly to the productivity or competitive advantage of the organisation.
